Emmanuel Canadian Reformed Church
Emmanuel confesses one true God in three distinct persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and holds the Bible to be God-breathed and inspired by the Holy Spirit. It accepts the Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession and Canons of Dort as faithful summaries of biblical teaching, and sums up its faith in the five solas, with salvation by Christ alone and grace alone; it describes the church as the gathering of God's people sanctified through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Emmanuel Canadian Reformed Church was instituted on January 1, 1974 and belongs to Classis Northern Ontario of the Canadian Reformed Churches. Its building is on Highway 7 east of the city in Guelph/Eramosa Township. The minister is Rev. Tyler Vandergaag, and Rev. Peter Feenstra is minister emeritus. Two services are held each Sunday and are streamed on YouTube.
What to expect
There is no dress code, though most people dress semi-formally or formally. The service follows a Reformed liturgy in which God greets his people and his Word is read and preached; singing is responsive throughout, using songs approved by the federation, usually with organ or piano, and services last about an hour. Morning sermons expound a Bible passage and afternoon sermons treat the Heidelberg Catechism. Babysitting is available for infants and toddlers, guests typically arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, and ushers help with seating and hand out bulletins and hymnals.
